Spelman College receives $38 million ‘unrestricted’ gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A multi-million dollar donation was made to an Atlanta HBCU by a well-known philanthropist for the second time.

On Monday, Spelman College announced what they call “a transformative, unrestricted” $38 million gift from MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

This is her second time giving to the university in the past five years, as she previously gave around $20 million to Spelman in 2020, which the university said “helped to support student scholarships and increase its endowment to provide a lasting source of funding for scholarships and academic programs.”

The university says Scott’s gift allows them to expand financial aid and scholarship support and invest in a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure “to enhance the academic experience.”

“We are grateful to MacKenzie Scott for this incredibly generous and unrestricted $38 million gift to Spelman College,” Spelman Interim President Rosalind “Roz” Brewer said. “This investment is a powerful affirmation of our mission and our commitment to educational excellence and equity.

According to Spelman, the gift will allow the university to continue to provide an accessible education.
